BEIJING qualified as a "blue sky day" yesterday despite the return of the smog that has blighted China's preparations for the Olympic Games.

Yesterday's air pollution index, which is published daily by the Beijing Municipal Environment Protection Bureau, was 80. Anything less than 100 - on a scale of one to 500 - qualifies as a "blue sky day". This was from noon on Sunday, when Beijing's rare run of three true blue sky days peaked, to yesterday at noon when the smog returned.

What China is facing at present is trying to balance the needs of a growing industrial economy with environmental issues like air quality and the lack of engagement and solutions to solve the problem.

I am sure we will watch with interest the games and how the air quality will affect the athletes.
